Marsh Sandpiper

November 6th, 2008

During migration period, they can be found with other shore birds at mudflats, estuaries and prawn ponds. As Sungei-Buloh-Wetland-Reserve is a prime site for them, they used to congregate in flocks of a few hundreds. They probes the mud surface frantically for food at low tide for minute invertebrate prey.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

November 6th, 2008

The 87 ha wetland site was designated as a nature park in Singapore in 1989. It is the time of the year where one can see flocks of migratory waders visiting Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve en route to Australia on their annual migratory flight along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

The pictures shows some of the landscape scene that one will encounter along the trail. Pls visit my previous posting which shows some of the interesting migratory bird in this reserve during the year end winter seasons.

Eurasian Curlew at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

November 5th, 2008

The Eurasian Curlew is a rare winter visitor to Singapore. This year, we are fortunate to have this Curlew paying a visit to the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve where previously they were spotted at Changi Cove.

They can be found at mugflats, seaward of mangrove forest and offshore islets. They usually can be found among other shore birds as this Curlew was founded to be among the rest of the waders at SBWR. It feeds using its specialised bill for probing deep into the soft mud for worms and crustaceans.

Bar Tailed GodWit at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

November 4th, 2008

Bar Tailed GodWit could be spotted at Sungei Buloh Reserve at this time of the year. Look out for them among the waders. They are large shore birds in winter plumage with very long straight bill and smooth grey upper parts. They have slightly upturned bill as compare to the Black Tailed Godwit

They are usually very quiet and make a soft kit-kit-kit when taking off. It is an uncommon winter visitor in Singapore. During the migratory seasons, they frequent mudflats, but does not comes into sandy shore or marshes.
